Inspired by real-life stories from those that lived through it, our VE Day project pays tribute to the many street parties that spontaneously broke out across the country at the end of World War II.

The project started life in Bentley, Doncaster as a commission from Right Up Our Street. We spent 3 months in the area, meeting people, dancing with people, and gathering local memories of wartime.  These memories inspired arts and crafts activities on the day, as well as a catalogue of brand new performances for the company.

Everything was 1940s themed – the music, dance moves, hairstyles, cakes and even fancy dress came from things the local community told us about life during that time.

Our time in Bentley culminated in us throwing a wonderful community party, and we were ecstatic to be joined by over 700 members of the local community aged 0-95 for a day full of performances, social dancing, singing, games, fancy dress and tea and cake!

Following this, we have reimagined the project and tailored it for a number of settings. This includes a sell out Spring Fling event at artsdepot in London with performances, social dancing, live music and craft activities for over 60s, and working with Deco Publique to take the experience in a care home setting as part of their Vintage by the Sea Festival in Morecambe.
